for the new era of my life (post-grad & new city!)
Not only is this a new quarter (July 2024), it’s also a new era of my life.
Where I am now? In the last week in my life blog post, I was in my final semester of law school/college. Three months later, as of July 2024, I am in post-grad life, and I’ve also moved to a new city (I moved from Canberra to Melbourne).
If you’re new here, I usually do these weeks in my life blog posts at least every quarter because I love looking back at them. If you want to read my other week in my life posts, you can find them at the end.
How have routines been lately?
Typically, I have a set wake-up time and schedule because I would have classes, work, and other activities that are fixed.
However, since I just moved into a new city and am in post-grad, I no longer have classes, I still need to find a job, and activities are scheduled at different times.
So, in this brief season of my life, I’ve been:
- Prioritizing myself (mainly my sleep since my sleep schedule was all over the place during the semesters);
- Doing my Practical Legal Training (PLT) – in Australia, after you complete your law degree, you need to get your Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice (through the PLT) before you apply for admission. This is a significant part of post-grad life for me;
- Looking for a new role – since I’ve moved, obviously I’ve resigned from my previous workshop roles;
- Spending time with my family – I mainly moved to Melbourne because my family is here, so obviously I’ve spent a lot more time with them lately;
- Making the most of this free time by doing activities I enjoy doing (such as exploring the city, going to the beach, trying out cafes). This is because once I do get a full-time job, I won’t have this much free time.
- Sometimes I will have a church event, networking event, or some other activity that I would schedule for all days.
There is pressure to lock in a full-time job as soon as possible in this post-grad season. But, I’ve come to realize that I shouldn’t rush this process. Law school made life hectic so completing my degree meant that I have all this newfound free time until I get a full-time job. And, I don’t know when I’ll get all this free time again once I lock in one.
Now, unlike other week in my life blog posts, I don’t have a set schedule. Instead, I’ll just share with you what my daily priorities look like.
Monday
On Mondays, the only set activity I have is church in the evening.
This is usually my to-do list for the day which can be completed at any time of the day:
- Morning habits – my morning routine is flexible with the habits, but I do these habits no matter how much I have planned for the day.
- Morning Walk – lately, I’ve been doing my morning walks at the beach. When I lived in Canberra, I was 2 hours away from the nearest beach. Now, I live about 25 minutes away from the nearest beach. I just know that once I get a full-time job, I won’t have time to have morning walks on the beach anymore lol.
- Creative/Content Work – my blog is still my passion project, so I make time to create content, edit work, and do anything else related to this.
- Job Hunt/Search – I dedicated a set amount of time to these tasks depending on what else I have scheduled for the day.
- Practical Legal Training (PLT) tasks – Mondays are when I go through the modules for the week. If there is more than one assignment due that week, I would start working on it that day too.
Tuesday to Thursday
On Tuesdays through Thursdays, I normally don’t have any set activities scheduled. I would just tackle the tasks that I have mentioned above.
Friday
Just like Monday, the only activity I would have scheduled on Friday is church in the evening.
Saturday & Sunday
Saturdays are when I have church activities. Sunday is a completely flexible day, but this is when I do my weekly reset.
To Wrap Up
So, I expect that this post-grad era will be a brief season of my life. Hopefully, in my next week in my life blog post, I have more to chat about. It’ll be interesting to see what my schedule would be like.
In the meantime, if you would like more resources to improve your productivity, the Free Resources Library has some resources for you to check out.
See you in the next blog post.
