Every action you take contributes to your journey…
Self-Discovery is all about… discovering yourself.
It’s all about discovering your purpose, what makes you feel fulfilled, what your passion is, and how you will make an impact.
It’s all of those mentioned things that can confuse people a bit. Not everyone’s purpose and goals are clear. In fact, not everyone knows their specific purpose and goals.
While it may be because they don’t know how to start, there’s another reason that people are pulled back from discovering themselves… it’s their lack of self-love.
Self-love is one big contributor to self-discovery. This is because you need to believe in yourself to believe that you deserve so much. That’s why this blog post is going to outline self-love habits that lead to self-discovery. These are not just any self-love habits. These are self-love habits that specifically lead to self-discovery.
1 – Appreciate How Special You Are Every Day
This is something you can do as a journal prompt. It’s a simple exercise, but can make a big difference.
When you think about it, there is no one exactly like you. Every person has their own unique qualities and talents. Even if they can be similar to other people, no one is the exact same.
With you, everything about you is unique. Your perspectives are unique. Your skills are unique. Your mindset is unique. Your life is unique.
Remembering the little and big things that you do, and appreciating how they make you special every single day will help you remember that it’s so much better to be different than the same as everyone else.
2 – Self-Talk
Having good self-talk is crucial. I have to maintain this habit all the time, because if I slip up this habit, I go into the direction of negativity.
In short, self-talk is the way you talk to yourself. You can either have positive self-talk that benefits and uplifts you, or negative self-talk that puts you down. At the end of the day, the way we talk to ourselves is going to affect our thoughts and actions.
Having good self-talk is a self-love habit because they help you rewire your brain and train is to think differently. This is beneficial in the journey of self-discovery because it changes the way you look at different opportunities and challenges for growth.
Without good self-talk, we may talk ourselves out of things or even lose chances just because we don’t feel worthy enough for them. But that’s far from true.
So that’s why, working on your self-talk is a habit that is worth working on daily….
3 – Do Things You Love
Sounds cliche, but if you’re not doing things you love, do you really think you’re going to spend all your days happy?
Think about things you love. These may include people, things, food, and experiences. Just think about the things that make you feel most like yourself.
If you are claiming that you love to do a certain activity, but you don’t remember the last time you did it, make the time. It’s not about finding the time, it’s about making the time.
Yes, we are all busy, but think about this. The people who make it a priority to enjoy their lives are enjoying their life right? I remember going on Instagram and seeing a friend of mine go on a 3 month yoga retreat which sounds absolutely amazing! I have another who has finally gone overseas for the first time since COVID-19 started.
That’s why, really think about what brings you joy and make the time for it. Think about the things you are currently doing now… do they bring you joy or do they make you dread the day?
Be proactive about creating the life you want. Make a life that you enjoy living.
4 – Treat Yourself Like Your Best Friend
Sounds like another cliche habit…. but it’s also another simple but effective one!
Treating yourself like your best friend pretty much means talking to yourself and caring for yourself as if you’re your best friend.
You’ve probably heard of this before, but would you tell your best friend that they are worthless, or they’re pretty stupid for doing this little mistake? Would you deprive them of the things that they love just because they didn’t get a certain thing perfect? No. So why would you do and say those things to yourself?
Treating yourself like your best friend isn’t just about the self-talk and actions you take towards yourself. It’s also a way to encourage you to take opportunities. Think about this, if a friend told you about an amazing opportunity that is incredible but is out of their comfort zone, would you tell them to take it? Or would you tell them that it’s too risky because it’s something they’ve never done before?
You would most likely tell them to take it! Because who would say no to that opportunity? Taking opportunities that’s out of your comfort zone is the way to self discovery!
5 – Ditch the Comparison
Think about this, whenever you compare yourself to someone else, you take yourself away from the journey of self-discovery.
Comparison is an easy way to lose self-discovery. When you worry about what someone else is doing, you lose focus on yourself. When you lose focus on yourself, you lose your self-discovery.
It doesn’t matter if someone is doing better. It doesn’t even matter in general what someone else is doing. All that matters is that you know and proud of what you’re doing.
6 – Ask Yourself Why
Another good habit to build for self-discovery is constantly asking yourself why?
This habit pretty much involves just quickly looking into your motivations for doing something.
Like, why are you about to say this? Why are you going to do this? Is it to be liked? Or is because it will genuinely be something that you enjoy?
Why are you going to pursue this project? Is it because it’s something you’re genuinely passionate about? Or is because it will make you look good?
While you don’t have to overthink and over-analyse everything, just answering the simple question of why can help you build integrity and honesty within yourself.
7 – Always Do Your Best
You’ve heard this… I’m sure. If you went to school, you’ve definitely heard it.
But it’s still an effective habit that you need beyond school.
Doing your best does a few things.
First, there’s no good feeling that comes from doing half-effort with anything. You would know if you didn’t put your 100%. Whatever the outcome is, you just won’t help it but ask yourself if it would’ve gone better if you actually tried harder.
Then, doing your best can also be a big reassurance booster as well. For instance, if you have done your 100%, you know that no matter what the outcome is, at least you’ve done your 100%.
This goes for work, studies, and also everything in your personal life as well such as your relationships! You will always feel better by knowing you did your best.
8 – Be an Alien
Being an alien means that you’re looking at the world as if you’re an alien that came onto earth. The alien knows nothing about the world… everything is new and exciting.
This is a pretty fun exercise for getting a new perspective and stepping outside your usual habits and routines. “Being an alien” can allow you to see more possibilities and resources that the world has to offer. There may be things that have been in front of you all along, but you never noticed it.
Sometimes, all we need to do is just change our perspectives for things to change for us.
Self-Love is one of the leads to Self-Discovery
In order to discover more about yourself, you need to believe in yourself more that you can do it. Everything that you do in your journey contributes to where you are going to go. Whether we decide to get out of our comfort zones and take action, or not do anything because of our limiting beliefs, it contributes to your journey.
Having self-love isn’t about loving yourself a lot and forgetting about everyone else. Having self-love is about being grateful for where you are now, and looking forward to more amazing things that could happen for you.
Having self-love is also about creating the life of your dreams because you know you deserve it. It’s this type of self-love that you build through habits that allows you to attract opportunities that take you to where you want to go.
And why wouldn’t you love yourself anyway, you’re the only person that has 100% seen everything in your life.
