You’re the star of your own life movie.
I remember the days where I was obsessed with structure and routine that I didn’t want to get out of it. I was afraid to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. But once I did, that’s where I discovered the beauty of living a main character life.
This blog post is going to talk about productive ways to live your main character life. You will learn of practical tips that can help you live your main character life. This blog post is definitely for everyone because we should all strive to build our main character life and feel that way too!
Here’s a spoiler alert – we’re all living our main character life already because we all have different goals, do different things, and have different life stories. But here’s how to build a main character life that we become a person that we will totally be friends with!
Let’s dive in!
1 – Don’t Let Rest Be a Reward… Let it Be Non-Negotiable
First, one of the ways to live a main character life is prioritizing yourself and your needs.
One of the most important needs is having regular rest.
When you think about it, rest needs to be non-negotiable!
After all, we are human, and we need rest. If we don’t have rest, then our productivity ends up getting affected anyway. And when we’re unproductive, it’s hard to do main character things!
By giving yourself regular rest, you have more drive and energy to pursue the things you want to do!
If you want to know how to be more unproductive (in a good way!), read this blog post. You can also read the blog post where it talks about why it’s important to have unproductive days.
2 – Take Regular Breaks from Your Regular Life (work/study/business/etc)
A part of your main character life is what you do for work, what you study, or if you have a business.
But it’s not just limited to that!
A huge part of your main character life are the things you do outside of all that! These can include your hobbies or your favorite self-care activities.
While it is extremely important to strive to do well in work/study/business, it’s important to take regular breaks from them. It doesn’t have to be a long-extended break. A couple of hours a day or one day a week can bring a lot of benefits.
The first big benefit is that by taking a break from your regular life (work/study/business), you give yourself more room to discover more about yourself and learn what else you enjoy doing.
We’re always going to be learning and growing. We’re always going to be discovering new things about ourselves. But if we’re always doing the same thing over and over again, we’re not giving ourselves opportunities to keep building that main character life.
And plus, similar to the first point, by giving ourselves regular break, we allow ourselves to always feel refreshed and recharged, and prevent burnout. When we do that, we’re also living a main character life because we prioritize our rest and recharge.
3 – Be Spontaneous Once in a While
Another part of living your main character life are spontaneously discovering new things about yourself.
Whether you’re a person that needs to stick to a schedule, or a person that just goes with the flow, there’s nothing wrong with being spontaneous every now and then.
And how can you be spontaneous? There are many different ways. Whether that’d be a day without a to-do list or going for a drive with no destination in mind.
Sometimes, it’s when you’re being spontaneous that you discover things about yourself! And it’s what you learn about yourself that give you that main character life!
4 – Have Regular Me Days
Last but not least, a BIG part of living a main character life is when you spend time with yourself in general.
It’s hard to live a main character life when you hardly spend time with yourself. This is because you live a main character life based on the things you discover about yourself, and on the things YOU do.
That’s why, it’s important to have days just for YOU. Even if you just spend time with yourself for a couple of hours, you can still learn about yourself.
So, choose some activities that you enjoy or try out new ones! If you are stuck on some ideas, read this blog post for a list of go-to self-care activities!
5 – Create Traditions
Just like how families or cultures have different traditions (e.g., a family has a tradition to spend New Year’s watching the fireworks, or a couple has a tradition to spend their anniversary watching a movie they both enjoy), you can come up with your own traditions!
For example, every Sunday, you try out a new restaurant and reflect on the week -> that’s a tradition.
Or every month you take yourself out to the movies -> that’s a tradition!
It may take some time to come up with your own traditions and that’s why it’s important to regularly make time for yourself so it can help you out!
6 – WEEKLY Self-Date
Living a main character life is also about building a better relationship with yourself!
Think about this. One of the ways a married couple can strengthen their relationship is by spending time with each other. One of the ways to do that is going on a date, at least weekly.
Same with you! One of the ways to build and strengthen the relationship you have with yourself is by having a self-date, at least weekly.
Like what we mentioned several times before, self-dates and me-time can help you discover activities you enjoy. You don’t have to worry about someone else not liking the activity. As long as you personally enjoy the activity!
If you’re stuck on self-date ideas, you can check out this blog post.
Or you can check out the Self-Date List available in the Free Resources Library where it categorizes self-date activities based on your love language!
7 – Schedule activities you already enjoy doing
Whatever activities you enjoy doing, make sure that you do more of it! After all, it makes sense to do more of the things you love than the things you don’t like doing.
Once it’s scheduled in, make sure that you don’t cancel on yourself. Unless of course there’s a legitimate reason (just like with cancelling on other people).
Every week I personally love calendar blocking and scheduling because it helps me make sure that I am making time for activities that I truly enjoy.
8 – Try out new activities
Every once in a while, (like maybe once a month), try out a new activity!
The best way to discover more about yourself is trying out a new activity. It’s hard to discover something new about yourself if you’re always doing the same thing over and over again.
The worst-case scenario is that you learn that you don’t like the activity and never do it again. The best-case scenario is that you discover something new about yourself!
Take a SMALL STEP
- Don’t let rest be a reward, let it be non-negotiable – Every day, schedule at least ONE hour of rest.
- Take regular breaks from your regular life (work/study/etc) – Same as above, schedule at least ONE hour of rest!
- Be spontaneous once in a while – Schedule a time this week or next week to do something spontaneous. Whether it’s going for a drive with no destination in mind, going for a walk with no place in mind, or even just spontaneously deciding on an activity to do.
- Have regular me days – Just like #1 and #2, schedule some time to have some rest. It’s during that “rest” time that you can decide what activities you want to do.
- Creating traditions – Come up with at least 3 traditions (monthly or weekly) that you can start doing for yourself.
- Weekly Self-Date – Come up with at least 3 self-date activities that you’ll do over the next month.
- Schedule in activities you enjoy doing – Just like #1, #2, and #4, you’ll schedule your rest/break/me-day. During that scheduled time, do an activity you love.
- Pick new activities to try out – List down 3 new activities that you’ve never done before and will try out.
Live that main character life!
The reason why it’s important to take regular breaks, rest, me-days, and spontaneous times is because it allows you to prioritize yourself first. When you prioritize yourself first, not only do you learn more about yourself in the process, but you’re living your main character life!
And to further live your main character life, you also create traditions for yourself, go on enjoyable self-dates, and try new things once in a while!
And if you feel like you haven’t been living your main character life, that’s okay! You can take small steps to improving yourself! You can read my book, Small Steps to Progression which you can download for free here! If you need some extra resources, you can access the Free Resources Library for many free resources to help you with your personal growth (because that will build your main character life!).
Just always remember that in the process of living your main character life, it’s important to be kind to yourself always, and focus on progress over perfection! You can do this, and I believe in you.
