Like, how does that actually look like?
Ever since I read books like Atomic Habits and The Compound Effect, I’ve become obsessed with the concept of being 1% better.
But the thing that is always on my mind is how does 1% better looks like?
What do I need to do? How much do I need to do it?
I’ve always been a technical person, so anything that involves numbers requires a strategy (something tangible, at least!).
And then, I discovered it! I noticed that as long as I do these 4 things every day, I am making 1% progress every single day.
And that’s exactly what I will share with you in this blog post!
Let’s dive in.
1 – Doing Your Habits
It’s true what they say that habits determine the direction of your life.
Habits are those little actions that you do, whether consciously or unconsciously, every single day.
And these “little actions” make up that 1%, if not more.
For example, your habits may be reading, taking a shower, or scrolling on social media. These habits make up the 1%. But the question is… is the 1% positive or negative?
To ensure that your habits have a positive effect, look into the ones that have a negative effect. Breaking a habit isn’t about getting rid of it, it’s about replacing it. In this blog post, I talk about how every habit has these three things: cue, habit, reward.
When you replace a bad habit, you’re still keeping the cue and the reward, but you’re just changing the habit.
So when you replace those negative habits with good ones, that is your 1% change.

2 – Your Routines
You also do your routines every single day. These include, but are not limited to:
- morning routine
- night routine
- exercise routine
- work/study routine
Here’s something that you may not realise about routines: your routines are a compilation of habits. So when your habits are automatic, your routines become automatic as well.
Similar to the previous point, if there is a part of your routine that is giving a negative effect (example, a habit on going on social media during your work breaks), then you need to replace it.
When you replace it, that is your 1% better change.
3 – Learning something new every day
This involves reading books, listening to podcasts, and even watching TikTok or YouTube videos (where you learn something).
Learning something new increases your knowledge. When you increase your knowledge, you gain 1% more. And there is your 1% better!
Easier said than done, right?

4 – Just ONE thing you can do differently every day
This can go concurrently with points 1 and/or 2. Or it can be something completely separate.
I look at this as a “Better Than Yesterday” exercise. Just think of one thing you can do today that will be better than yesterday.
And that could be a different habit (like in point 1), or doing something different in your routines (point 2). It can even be implementing something you’ve read or watched in a video (like in point 3).
Sometimes, it can be just doing a little bit more. For example, if you’ve walked 6,000 steps, maybe tomorrow you can walk 6,500 steps.
It will look different every day.
There’s no way to determine what exactly is “1%” better. But, as long as you are doing something that will add value to your day and subsequently, your life, there is some percentage% of growth happening!
This is something I wish I knew earlier about personal development.
Take a SMALL STEP
Here’s a little better than yesterday exercise you can do:
- 3 things you did well today (your 3 wins); and
- ONE thing you can do tomorrow that will be better than yesterday – you can pick from the list of points 1-3, or do your own.
To Wrap Up
As you can see, by doing your habits, routines, and learning something new every day, you are already making some sort of %percentage% of growth. It may more than 1%, it may be less than that, but there is some growth happening. Small growth and small steps are better than none at all!
If you want to take small steps and want to know different ways you can do it, I have a book available on Amazon called Small Steps to Unlocking Growth – it’s only $11.99AUD if you purchase as a Kindle!
In the meantime, here’s to getting 1% better.
