It’s like being in your own TV show or movie!
It took me way too long to realize that everyone has their own different journey, and their own main character life. Living my main character life helped me realize how unique I was, and how fun it is to enjoy a life that is personalized to me.
But even though everyone is living their own main character life, some don’t even realize it. In fact, some people believe that their life is mundane or repetitive because they’re the same thing. But that doesn’t have to be the case.
Since your life is already unique and different just like everyone else, it’s also important to start living like your own main character. You’re already a main character, it’s time to start living like it is.
This blog post is your ultimate beginner guide to living your main character life, uncovering 7 steps that will help you live your main character life like your own TV show or movie.
You will learn of each of these steps in depth from caring for your life domains to implementing main character life habits. You’ll begin to see that your life is unique and that you can act like the main character any time you want to. This beginner guide will show you how to make the most of it.
Let’s dive in.
Step 1 – Your Life Domains
One of the first important steps of living your main character life is making sure that you are taking care of all your life domains. Your life domains include:
- Physical – your physical health
- Mental/Emotional
- Spiritual – your connection with your beliefs (religion, culture)
- Intellectual – how you grow your knowledge
- Social – all your relationships
- Vocational – your career
- Avocational – your hobbies and other activities
- Financial – your personal or family finances
It’s important to embrace each of these aspects of your life as it empowers you to take charge of your own journey and live your main character life.
Maybe you’re wondering, there’s so many life domains, how do I even begin to address all of these?
No stress at all! You just need to take small steps. The small step is to rate how satisfied with each of them on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest).
Based on what’s given a lower rate, that’s what you begin your focus on. Of course, you don’t want to neglect anything, but by giving a rating for each life domain, you’re self-aware on what you need to work on the most.

STEP 2 – Have Hobbies
Part of living a main character life is engaging in your passions and interests, which include hobbies!
Hobbies are important to living a main character life because they contribute to your personal growth and sense of identity. Having different hobbies allows you to discover more about yourself and develop new skills.
There are different types of hobbies that you can implement in your life that can benefit you in many ways. These include hobbies that:
- Grow your knowledge – e.g. reading, anything that will help you build a new skill
- Enhance your mindset – e.g. writing, listening to podcasts
- Make you money – any hobby that you can make money out of one day, e.g. art or writing skills
- Make you creative – e.g. painting, cooking, photography
- Keep you fit – e.g. hikes, running, kickboxing
- Allows you to relax – e.g. watching documentaries, spa days
- Allows you to meet people – e.g. any hobby that has a class involved,
- Allows you to help people – e.g. any volunteer work
Just note that you don’t have to have 8 different hobbies, some hobbies you have can actually interrelate with one another! You can read more about these hobbies here.
So, if you want to try and start finding hobbies, you can start by filling in these 8 types of hobbies and go from there!
For example, a hobby of kickboxing can help keep you fit, and also allows you to meet people as well!
Another hobby is hiking which can help keep you fit, and also enhance your mindset.
Cooking is another hobby that can help grow your knowledge and make you creative.
STEP 3 – Unique Obsessions
Your unique obsessions are pretty much your random interests. These “obsessions” add a touch of individuality and excitement to your life, and they’re all yours! Whether it’s a love for penguins, bookstores, or pretty much anything, these “unique obsessions” are a part of your main character’s life.
Think about something that you love collecting or you always look forward to seeing. In fact, there may be some “unique obsession” that you didn’t know you have!
For example, I realized that I have a “unique obsession” for water views. I noticed that every time I see water I just love looking at the view. Then, I found myself wanting to find places that have water views. This little quirk of mine is one of the things that make my main character life unique.

STEP 4 – Setting Your Goals
Another part of living your main character life is having goals, whether they are short-term, long-term, or are your personal, professional, or creative ambition goals.
For living a main character’s life, setting goals is essential as it also gives you direction and purpose. By identifying your goals and dreams, you can stay focused and motivated. Think about it, when you’re watching a movie or TV show, the main character typically has a goal or objective they want to achieve. Setting goals for yourself is exactly like that.
If you want to set goals effectively, you can start with this goal-setting routine. Remember, that you’re not just limited to setting goals during the new year. You can set new goals at any time of the year!
These are the steps to the routine:
- Do a solo thing – This can be anything as long as your by yourself. The reason why you’re doing a solo thing is so you can take the time to figure out what you truly want without the input of other people. Sometimes your best ideas come while you’re having fun!
- Set a time for goal setting – Take your time when setting your goals. This is not something to rush.
- List your life domains – Like what was mentioned in the first point, these include your physical health, emotional/mental health, spiritual, intellectual, social, careers & goals, hobbies, and financial. It’s important to set mini goals for each of these so you can make sure that you’re not neglecting any of them.
- List your limiting beliefs – List your beliefs that are holding you back from achieving your goals, and switch them to more beneficial ones.
- Write down your goals – and make sure that they are specific!
- Identify WHY you want to achieve them – It’s important to have a WHY behind why you want to achieve your goals, this will be your motivating factor.
- Create systems to achieving them – it’s one thing to set a goal, it’s another to take action on it. Create a plan or system to help you achieve them.
STEP 5 – Create a Mini Biography (aka a ME LIST)
A mini biography is something you can type up or write on a notebook that shows your life highlights, achievements, defining moments, your life story… pretty much everything about you!
Living your main character life means remembering who you are and having a strong sense of identity. By creating a mini biography, you have something to look back on to remind you of how unique you are, and the progress you have made.
It’s easy to get into the comparison trap or lose yourself from time to time. That’s why creating a mini biography that highlights everything about you is great to revisit so you can have that boost of self-assurance.

STEP 6 – Set your Style
Another HUGE main character aspect (just like a main character of a TV show) is their style. This is also how you can express your individuality and boost your self-confidence. After all, when you look good, you feel good.
There are many ways that you can find your main character style. You can find inspiration from many TV characters, fashion icons, movies, or even social media. The best efficient way to find your style is to experiment with different looks and see what you love the most. Remember that your style will evolve and change as you evolve and change.
Another way (one thing I do) is to pick a character from a TV show or movie who’s style you really like. My one is Rachel from Friends. While I don’t wear everything she wore on the show, I take inspiration from her. I think about how she would dress casually, for work, and even the clothes she wore at home.
Ultimately, this is the part of your main character life where it’s visible to everyone else. It’s a way to make your main character life more productive. So it’s important to take the time to learn more about this!
STEP 7 – Main Character Habits
Last but not least, these are main character’s life habits to build!
- Regular Intentional rest – Setting intentional time to rest and recharge regularly. The main character needs to relax too!
- Being spontaneous – While it’s important to plan things, it’s also important to be spontaneous once in a while. After all, that’s where more beautiful moments come in.
- Regular me-days – Don’t forget to set time for yourself to focus on self-care and personal growth.
- Create your own weekly traditions – Think about how a family would have traditions (e.g. a family has a tradition to watch the game every Sunday, etc). Create your own traditions that you enjoy.
- Weekly solo dates – Take yourself out on dates, and do activities you enjoy!
- Embrace challenges – Every character in a movie and TV show has go to through some sort of challenge (that’s what makes the movie/TV show entertaining right?). So when you go through your own challenges, think about that.
- Romanticize your life – Find joy and beauty in the present moment, romanticize even the small and mundane moments.
