I failed 8 classes in law school. However, I ended law school on a high and got 3 HD’s in my last semester.
I’m going to share in this blog post the main law school study tips that helped me improve my grades immensely and succeed.
Let’s dive into the 5 tips
1 – Plan your Semester
Whether it’s through a paper planner or electronically. Have something to note down all your due dates for assessments, exams, and homework.
I honestly feel like my law school experience, my make-or-break was determined by how organised I was.
You know that law is a huge workload. So, if you’re not organised, it’ll be more challenging to stay on top of everything.
Have something that works for you to stay on top of it.

2 – Doing exam notes as you go
The timeframe between your last class and your first exam isn’t a lot of time.
I preferred to prepare for an exam 3 weeks before. However, classes are usually not done for the semester, and there are sometimes assessments still due.
By doing exam notes as I go, it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
What you can do is, after the lectures and classes are completed for the week, that’s when you create your exam notes. It would take an extra 30 minutes a week to make exam notes for that week’s topic.
So, when it’s time to prepare for exams, you already have exam notes ready to go, and you can go straight into reviewing.
3 – 3 week rule for starting assessments
I don’t know why 3 weeks works; it just happens to work every time.
You want to avoid doing assessments at the last minute, and 3 weeks is a good number because it is a lot of time, but also, if there are things that happen along the way, you have leeway.

4 – Addressing what you don’t understand immediately
Not doing this contributed to my failed grades.
Basically, whenever you come across something you don’t understand, address it immediately. Don’t wait until it’s closer to exam time to address it.
You can do this in multiple ways, like asking your teachers/professor, doing extra reading, research, going through the lecture again, and basically anything to help you better understand the content.
5 – Don’t miss a week
This isn’t necessarily just not missing a week of lectures or classes. But don’t miss a week of exam notes.
For example, if you were sick during the week, or something happened, and you missed a lecture, catch up ASAP. Missed work accumulates fast.
Even just having some sort of exam notes, like getting it through the lecture slides or notes from a friend. Have something. Something is better than nothing.
To Wrap Up
Overall, these are the tips that helped me go from failing classes to succeeding:
- Plan your semester
- Doing exam notes as you go
- 3-week rule for starting assessments
- Address what you don’t understand immediately
- Don’t miss a week
Failing law school classes may feel like all hope is lost when improving your grades. Planning ahead of time, doing everything as you go, and staying on top of everything, it can make a difference in your law school grades. Sometimes, it is really in the small habits and changes you make to your study routine.
