Yes, having a morning routine is important BUT do you need to have 10 things to do?
I have been obsessed with watching morning routine videos (along with night routines, day in my life videos) for as long as I can remember. I recall trying to replicate an exact morning routine from a YouTuber I had just watched. I also remember how overwhelmed I felt watching so many different things you “need” to include in your morning routine.
Now, my morning routine is quite simple, and it works well for me. It goes to show that you do not need to have a 10-step morning routine to be successful or for the morning routine to be good.
In this blog post, I will outline three reasons why you don’t need a 10-step morning routine (could also apply to night routine) and what to do instead.
1 – It’ll get overwhelming, especially in the mornings
In the mornings, you want to make things as easy for you as possible.
If you’re starting to create a morning routine, having a lot in the routine can feel overwhelming. So, instead of feeling like you’re set up for the day, you feel stressed and overwhelmed with the many things you need to do.
It’s great to have some good habits to do in the morning, however, how many do you really need?
What to do instead:
If you feel like you need to incorporate all these habits into your morning routine, that’s okay. However, if you are just starting, it’s better to start small and then add more habits as you go. But more on that later.

2 – Hard to Stay on Track
On top of it feeling overwhelming, it can also feel hard to stay on track with multiple morning habits.
If you want to make your morning routine consistent and feel like you are on top of everything, you need to make it feel easier to track.
When you have multiple steps in your morning routine, it can feel hard to track all of them at once. From experience, skipping just one habit can make you feel like you are off track and falling behind.
But your morning routine isn’t supposed to feel that way. You are supposed to not feel stressed. Your morning routine is supposed to help you feel less stressed for the day ahead!
What to do instead:
Like previously stated in the last point, if you are starting a morning routine, you don’t want to just add all of them at once. You can start with a few habits, and then as you get used to them, add more as you go. Again, more on this next point.
3 – You need to start small
Like what I have said previously in this blog post, you don’t want to start with multiple habits at once. Instead, you want to start small with 1-2 habits, and then as you get used to them, add more as you go.
I felt it worked better this way because first, I don’t get so overwhelmed in the morning. Instead of everything feeling chaotic because of multiple habits, I feel less stressed and more ready to start the day.
Second, it’s easier to learn more about what works and what doesn’t. If you have multiple habits in your morning routine, it’s hard to figure out what’s working and what’s not. By starting small, it’s easier to track.
Then, of course, as you get used to your routine, you can add more habits. At that point, it doesn’t feel so overwhelming because you’re already used to a few of the habits.
Take a SMALL STEP
If you are starting to create a morning routine, here are some small steps to get started:
- Pick at least 1-3 habits that you want to do in the mornings.
- Only incorporate those 1-3 habits in your routine until you feel like it’s instilled in your lifestyle.
- Then, add another habit when you feel ready to do so.
To Wrap Up
Hopefully, not adding so many steps in your morning routine right away will help you feel less overwhelmed and make it easier to track. When you start small, it’ll be easier to see what’s working in your lifestyle and what’s not.
That’s the power of small steps! It doesn’t feel overwhelming, and you are still making a step forward. I’ve actually got a book available on Amazon all about taking small steps: BUY AS A KINDLE ON AMAZON FOR ONLY $11.99AUD
In the meantime, here’s to winning your mornings.
