Self-care is supposed to be fun!
I’ve got to admit, I always look forward to the time when I get to do my self-care. Just like charging my phone battery, I need to charge my own batteries too! Although sometimes it gets boring doing the same thing over and over again, I’ve picked up a few ways to make it more enjoyable and exciting over time.
In this blog post, I will share with you the 5 things that help me make self-care more enjoyable and fun and look forward to it each time. These are also tips that help my self-care time be more exciting since I’m doing different activities each time, as well as activities I love doing. This blog post is for anyone who wants to make self-care more fun and enjoyable!
So, let’s dive into these 5 things.
1 – Self-Care Menu
If you’ve ever been to a restaurant, you’ve obviously seen a menu. In this menu, there are a bunch of choices of what you can eat and drink. A self-care menu is just like a restaurant menu, except the menu is a list of self-care activities.
You can create a self-care menu by listing down your favorite self-care activities that make you feel refreshed, recharged, and most importantly, you get excited to do it! You can also add self-care activities that you want to try out as well. If you need some ideas on what self-care activities you can put on there, you can find inspiration on Pinterest, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. (you can also check out my blog post – self-care activities without spending a dime for self-care ideas that don’t have to cost much!).
Having a self-care menu personally makes self-care more enjoyable for me because of the excitement of having so much to choose from! There is no pressure for me to specifically do a self-care idea if I don’t feel like it, I simply choose from the self-care menu which one I want to do today. Just like being excited about what to order from a restaurant menu, I get that same excitement when choosing from the self-care menu!
An example of a self-care menu could look like:
- Walk in nature
- Reading a fun book
- Listening to a podcast
- Watching YouTube videos
- Watching a comfort TV show
- Cooking my favorite meal
- Ordering my favorite food
- Baking my favorite treats
- Watching a movie I haven’t seen before
- Watching a comfort movie
And the list goes on!!
2 – Self-Care Jar
A self-care jar is where you put a whole bunch of self-care activities in a jar. Then, when it’s time for your self-care and you feel spontaneous, you simply randomly draw something from the jar, and whatever you get, you’ll do!
Similar to the self-care menu, you put your favorite activities that excite you, as well as activities that you want to try out. Instead of writing it in one page on a menu, you put it on separate pieces of paper and then put them individually in the jar.
I personally use these jars for my solo dates! With my solo date jars, I categorized them into solo dates that can be planned, spontaneous, or done at home. The ones that can be done at home is technically my self-care jar! Self-care jars are great for me because on days when I feel indecisive on what activity I want to do, I let my self-care jar decide! Because let’s face it, while there will be days when you know exactly what you want to do for self-care, there will be days when you can’t seem to choose. That’s why the self-care jar is so handy.
Here are some activities that I put in my self-care jar:
- At home spa
- Homemade pizza night
- Watch a childhood movie
- Bake
- Dessert night
- Video games
- Do a puzzle
- Create vision boards

3 – Your own traditions
If you’re familiar with traditions, you know that they are traditions because they are special to a family or culture. For example, a family may have a tradition of watching a movie in the cinemas every month because it’s their special time to bond as a family. Another example is a couple who will recreate their first date photos every year because it’s a time to commemorate their relationship.
You can also have your own traditions that you do with yourself! I personally find having my own traditions very special because it makes me feel unique and it builds the relationship I have with myself. I also have something to look forward to every week/month every time it approaches that tradition.
Examples of some of my traditions include:
- Cooking a meal I’ve never cooked before after every kickboxing class/session
- Taking myself out on a solo date every week
- Treating myself to a treat after every networking event
Think of something that you enjoy doing and think about how you can make it your own personal tradition.
4 – Keep trying new activities
Another way to make self-care more enjoyable is simply trying out a new self-care activity every once in a while. Trying out new activities helps you learn more about yourself and discover more of your interests and what you enjoy.
You can find ideas pretty much anywhere! From a simple Google search to finding inspiration on social media such as Pinterest (which in my personal opinion is the best place for inspiration), Instagram, TikTok, and even YouTube.
The reason why I find trying out new activities makes self-care more enjoyable is because it helps me not to get bored of doing the same self-care things over and over again. Because let’s face it, sometimes when we do the same thing over and over again, it gets boring and less exciting. That’s why by shaking things up with new self-care activities every now and then, it gets exciting.
The worst-case scenario is that you discover that you don’t like this activity you tried out, and you learn to never do it again. After all, that is the process of learning.

5 – Finding inspiration on social media
To help out with #4, a good place to start is finding inspiration on social media. I know that social media has its reputation for being a distraction. But we’ve got to admit that when it comes to finding new ideas, it can be extremely helpful!
I personally enjoy going on Pinterest because I love the different graphics and links to blog posts that help me read more about the different self-care ideas. I also enjoy finding ideas on TikTok and Instagram, especially when the ideas come from accounts I follow, and the algorithm actually gives me content that relate to that.
This is a great easy step to take if you’re looking to make self-care more enjoyable. After all, you need to get ideas from somewhere, so doing this tip can be a great first step to motivating yourself to do your self-care.
Take a SMALL STEP:
Here are some small steps you can take to implement at least one of these tips:
- Self-Care Menu – Start this one by listing down your favorite self-care activities.
- Self-Care Jar – Just like above, you can list down your favorite self-care activities, only this time write them on separate pieces of paper and put them individually in the jar.
- Your own traditions – List down things you already enjoy doing and see if you can turn at least one of them into a tradition.
- Keep trying new activities – List down at least 3 activities you want to try soon.
- Finding inspiration social media – Check out at least one social media platform from which you’ll try to find inspiration.
