And this is how I learn more about yourself!
This is more of a personal experience post. I’m going to share with you my routine for self-discovery! And yeah, that’s a thing. I created a routine for myself that helped me learn more about… me!
This whole personal development journey had also bought out the self-discovery journey at the same time. In this self-discovery journey, I’ve learned so much about what I enjoy, what I hate, and what I truly am passionate about.
And that’s what this blog post is going to cover. I’m going to share with you my self-discovery routine. You will learn of how to create a routine that will allow you to discover more about yourself. This is for all those who want to build a better relationship with themselves through self-discovery.
After you read this blog post, definitely read the habits that lead to self-discovery, and the 7 steps to level up your life! It’ll definitely help you make the most of your self-discovery journey.
And I would also love to know your thoughts on this routine! The comments are only seen by me so feel free to be as open as you’d like!
Step 1 – Creating Weekly Traditions
You know how families or different cultures have certain traditions?
For example, a couple on their anniversary has a tradition to watch a particular movie that they both enjoyed when they first met. Or a family has a tradition every year to spend New Years’ watching the fireworks.
So why not have traditions for yourself?
Maybe, after work every day, you cook yourself a good meal and binge watch your favourite TV show -> that’s a tradition.
Or even every Sunday you try out a new restaurant to celebrate and reflect on the week -> that’s a tradition.
Here are a list of my weekly traditions:
- After my Muay Thai kickboxing class, I go to the Asian Grocery Store, buy some goodies (personal favourite at the moment is dumplings and Matcha ice cream), cook the dumplings at home, and relax with my favourite TV show.
- Every week, I do at least one work session at a cafe.
- Minimum one self-date a week where I enjoy my company.
- Twice a week, when I put a face mask on, I put on the TV and watch a show I’ve been loving at the moment.
Now, it’s your turn!
Step 2 – Create Monthly Traditions
Same exact thing, except it’s the monthly traditions.
Another tip for creating traditions for yourself is to think of traditions that other families or couples already have, and see if you can turn them into self-traditions.
For example, a family may have a monthly tradition to go to the movie cinemas and watch the latest movie. You can turn that into a self-tradition by having a monthly cinema self-date! Or even a movie night session at home.
Here are some of my monthly traditions:
- Tour a tourist attraction in the city I live in (or if I am travelling, tour that city) whether with friends or on my own.
- Do a self-date hike where I reward myself with good food after.
- Try out a new restaurant every month (although this has slowly became a weekly thing)
- Monthly movie cinema self-date!
- Monthly arcade self-date.
- Paint and drink BUBBLE TEA (this is a recently new one!)
- Visit the beach (whether with friends or as a self-date)
- Visit a small town and do self-touring (bi-monthly)
- When I go to a Meetup event, I drink my favourite beverage (either coffee or an energy drink), because I need full battery (introvert-life).
- Do an at home-spa day (I’m actually making this a weekly tradition now, once a month is not enough!)
Step 3 – DAILY self-care time
Every single day, no matter what, it’s so important to make time for yourself. Even if it’s just 15 minutes, it can make a big difference to the relationship you have with yourself.
Because think about it, would spouses have a better relationship with each other if they make time for each other every day? Of course they would!
Same with having a better relationship with yourself. A way to have a better relationship with yourself is to have daily self-care time.
Here are some self-care options that I choose from daily:
- Take a walk
- Dinner & TV show time
- Window shopping (or actual shopping) at the shops
- Play the Sims
- Take a nap
- Put on a face mask
And this list will still always add more!
You can also make a list of go-to daily self-care ideas for you to do!
Step 4 – WEEKLY self-date
Now the weekly task of the routine is to do a self-date!
A self-date is where you can take yourself out, do an activity you enjoy, and get used to spending time in your own company!
When you think about a married couple, one of the ways they can strengthen their marriage is by going on a date at least once a week.
Same with ourselves… we build and strengthen the relationship we have with ourselves by having a self-date.
Self-dates help us discover activities that you enjoy. You don’t have to worry about someone else not liking the activity. As long as you personally enjoy the activity, you can do the self-date!
Here are my list of self-date ideas:
- Lunch/Dinner at a restaurant
- Tour a tourist attraction
- Solo hike or coastal walk
- Movie time at the cinemas
- Game time at the arcade
- Get bubble tea and do some painting
- Adventure at the beach
- At home spa day
Now, make a list of different activities you already enjoy, and turn them into a self-date. At least once a month, think of a new self-date idea to try out!
Step 5 – MONTHLY tasks
Schedule in activities you already enjoy doing
Whatever activities you already love doing, make sure you do more of it! It makes sense to do more of the things you love than the things you don’t like.
That’s why, schedule in time for activities that you enjoy. If it’s scheduled in, make sure you don’t cancel on yourself (unless there’s a legitimate reason, just like with cancelling on other people).
Every week is when I do my calendar blocking and scheduling on Google Calendar. I schedule in my weekly traditions and one (or two) of my monthly traditions. By scheduling it in, I know that I will get to do it. If it’s not scheduled in, it’s so much easier to procrastinate on it.
Pick one new activity to try out
Then of course, the best way to discover more about yourself is to try out a new activity every month!
Then, once you try out the activity, you can decide whether you like it or not.
For example, you may try out paddle boarding as a new activity, and realise that it’s too much of a hassle and cost to rent a paddleboard. Plus, you don’t really like it anyway. So you decide that it’s not the activity for you.
OR you may realise that you absolutely love paddleboarding and make it a monthly tradition of yours! But you’ll never know the answer unless you try.
A few places that I discover ideas of activities to try out include:
- Pinterest – my number one place
- YouTube
- Blog posts (you can steal some of my ideas!)
Take a SMALL STEP
You’re more than welcome to steal my “self-discovery” routine! You can go over this blog post again, and this time, go through each of the steps and apply them accordingly. For your reference, here’s a summary of those steps!
- Create Weekly Traditions
- Create Monthly Traditions
- Daily – Self-Care Time – make a list of go-to daily self-care activities.
- Weekly – Self-Date – make a list of go-to self-date ideas
- Monthly – schedule in the activities you enjoy doing & every month, pick one new activity to try out.
Enjoy the journey!
There’s no doubt that a self-discovery journey is a BIG journey. Every single day you get to learn more about yourself and what you’re passionate about.
By creating traditions for yourself, and having a go-to list of activities that you already enjoy, not only do you get used to spending time in your own company, you also know more of what you like and dislike.
It’s hard to have a great self-discovery journey if we’re afraid to do things on our own. That’s why, we mentioned the steps to create lists of activities that you already enjoy so it’s not a nerve-wrecking.
Most importantly, stay kind to yourself during this journey. Don’t be afraid of trying new things. Don’t be afraid of things not working out. Everything you do is a contribution to your self-discovery journey.
Even if you just take small steps, you’re still moving forward.
