How to be productive? How to be unproductive!
Since there are so many “how to be productive” posts out there (I’ve written a few different ones myself! Read my productivity blog posts on here!) why not switch things up and write a blog post on how to be unproductive?
This blog post is going to unpack how to be unproductive. Like how to actually be your most unproductive self as much as possible.
We’ll outline 4 ways to be unproductive. We have all wanted to be more productive before, but what about being unproductive? We all know that taking breaks and rest actually ironically makes us more productive. That’s why this blog post is going to outline how to be unproductive so that we can be more productive (picking things up now?).
If you’re looking for a blog post on how to be more productive, you can definitely read my past blog posts on actual ways to be more productive, easy productivity tips, and building a foundation for better productivity… these are among plenty of more productivity blog posts.
This blog post is for all those who want to be unproductive because you feel like you need a break from being productive!
1 – Don’t Even THINK About Being Productive
One way to ruin your well-deserved break or rest is to think about how you can be productive.
It’s YOUR break & rest, stop thinking about how you can make it productive. It doesn’t have to be, and it’s not supposed to be.
When it’s your break and rest, it’s simply that, a break and rest. Do things that has nothing to do with what you usually do…. it’s called a break for a reason.
Nap more, sleep more, or just sit down and do nothing. Catch up on TV shows, or watch random YouTube videos. It’s your break, the things you do in your break doesn’t have to be “productive”.
2 – Do Things that Having Nothing to Do With Work
It’s called “unproductive time”, rest, or a break for a reason!
You’re taking time away from work and doing things that is going to recharge your batteries.
Think about this, can you recharge your batteries with the very thing that drains your battery?
For example, your job does take your energy! Whether you feel fulfilled by it or not, whatever work you do is going to take your energy.
And when you’re tired from work, can you recharge your batteries by doing more work? The common sense answer is no. You can’t recharge your batteries with what had drained your batteries.
It’s just like your phone battery. When the battery is low, you can’t recharge those batteries by using it more, you have to do something else.
The point here is that it’s important to have other things to do that has nothing to do with work. And yes, I am talking about all those hobbies and all. Do some self-care, exercise, and do fun stuff…. step away from work for a break every once in a while.
3 – Don’t Plan Anything & Have No To-Do Lists
Isn’t one of the productivity tips is to plan everything in advance? Well, when it comes to being unproductive, you don’t have to plan anything!
It does feel great knowing that there is nothing planned for the day. That’s because it means you can do anything you want! While during a regular day you need to take time choosing what you should do, so you can avoid forgetting anything, a unproductive day allows you to shut out from all that, and simply let your headspace relax.
So when those days approaches, try not to plan anything “productive” or anything that will make your break “productive” (remember number 1?)
4 – Just be lazy
There, it has been said. Just be lazy. Have that lazy day.
When it’s your rest & break, it’s a great time to do nothing.
Lazy can mean many things to people. Lazy to you can mean just doing absolutely nothing, or it can be just sitting down watching your favourite shows all day.
Give yourself a favour and be lazy once in a while. Again, no pressure to be productive, and do things that have nothing to do with what you usually do!
Take a SMALL STEP
So, the next time you have a day-off or any sort of day when you can do absolutely nothing, remember these things:
- Don’t plan anything else – once you have set that particular day to be unproductive, you don’t have to plan anything else. We’re always planning what to do every day, let this day be the day-off from planning.
- Do things that have nothing to do with work – maybe make a list of go-to things you can do that has nothing to do with work.
- Then try not make these things “productive”.
- Be lazy… whatever that means for you…
To be more productive, you’ve got to be unproductive once in a while
This blog post was meant to be really ironic. But it’s true – to be more productive, you’ve got to have unproductive days once in a while.
Sometimes we see everywhere on how to be more productive, that we forget how to be unproductive. Sometimes we forget how to simply do nothing and just rest. Sometimes we forget that not every single day is meant to be “productive”.
No matter what, our productivity never determines our worth and who we are. If we decide to be unproductive today, it doesn’t matter. Even if we decided to be productive, it doesn’t matter. Our worth is not determined by our level of productivity.
