The key to making the most of your day.
Creating routines is a great first step to changing your life. Routines are great because once they are instilled into your routine, they become automatic. When they are automatic, you don’t even have to think about it, and it becomes effortless.
But what routines do you need to implement in your life? Ever since I was younger, I loved watching morning and night routine videos from my favorite beauty guru YouTubers. Growing up, I realized how important these routines actually were to my day-to-day life and they weren’t just for fun.
In this blog post, I’ll share with you 5 non-negotiable routines you need to implement in your life daily, and I’ll wrap it up with why you can’t live without them.
Let’s get into this.
1 – Morning Routine
This is the very first routine you do in your day.
Your morning routine consists of different habits that help you feel ready for the day.
For example, my morning routine consists of these habits:
- Read
- Journal
- Morning Walks
- Listening to a podcast
Your morning routine is important because it helps you set the tone for the day. For instance, if you started the day off feeling stressed and rushed, then that’s the tone you set for the rest of the day.
You can’t control what happens throughout the day, but you can control how you approach your mornings. Without having a proper morning routine, it doesn’t feel like you have control over the start of your day.

2 – Night Routine
Now, we’re going the opposite end. This is the last routine you do in your day.
Like what I mentioned earlier, you can’t control what happens throughout the day. However, you can control how you start and end your day.
Just like your morning routine, your night routine consists of habits that do the following:
- Help you prepare for the next day
- Help you wind down
For example, a few of my night habits include:
- Shower
- Preparing my bag and outfit for the next day
- Wind down with a nice hobby.
Your night routine is important because it helps you wind down for a better morning (and a more effective morning routine) and helps prepare you for the day ahead, so you don’t have to stress about it in the morning.
Overall, your night routine is all about making life easier for yourself the next day. Without having a night routine, it can make the following day feel unorganised, and you may also not get the best wind down/sleep time. That will also affect your morning.

3 – Self-Care Routine
This is where you implement self-care.
However, the difference between this routine and the morning & night routine is that there is a lot of flexibility, and you can even incorporate it into another routine.
For example, you can incorporate your self-care into your morning routine, such as doing some journalling and coffee. The same with your night routine.
It is important to have time for yourself and have rest and recharge every day. That’s why, having a self-care routine is important. The good part is that you can be really flexible with this routine. If you don’t incorporate it with your morning and night routine, the self-care routine can be integrated any part of the day.
Without having a self-care routine that you can stick to, it’ll be harder to ensure that you get that daily rest and recharge you need.

4 – Exercise Routine
You have probably heard it all the time that it’s important to exercise every day.
Your exercise routine is all up to you and your preferences.
For example, if you prefer walks over going to the gym, then that’s your exercise routine. If you have a workout plan at the gym or at home, that’s your exercise routine.
Once you decide which activity (or activities) you are doing, then you have your exercise routine. You now just need to find the time to do it. It can be in the morning, after work, or in the evenings.
The important part is to schedule it. If it’s not scheduled, it is less likely that you’ll follow through on it. So, make the time for it. The more you do it, the more it becomes a habit. Without having a exercise routine, it’ll be hard to turn it into a habit.
5 – Work/Study Routine
Depending on what you do, you will have a work/study routine.
How this is approached is different to everyone. It depends on the nature of work they do and their preferences.
For instance, one person’s work routine is that they work a 9 to 5, they have a routine of checking emails in the morning, during the hard tasks throughout the day, and wrap the day up with checking emails.
Another person’s work routine is that they work from home, have a more flexible job, and find that they work best in the morning so that’s when they do all the work.
You can check out this blog post on how to create an effective work/study routine based on your circumstances.
Having a good work and/or study routine is important because it allows you to stay on track with what you need to do and it improves your workflow. Without it, your work/study can feel unstructured and unorganised.
Take a SMALL STEP
Create a list of 3-5 habits for the following routines:
- Morning Routine
- Night Routine
Create a list of 3-5 activities for the self-care routine.
Choose 1-2 exercise activities for your exercise routine.
For your study/work routine, do the following:
- Confirm what times of the day you’ll work/study (based off your work/study schedule)
- Have a planner and to-do list of all the tasks you need to complete
- Every day, review your to-do list/planner, and prioritize what you will complete for that day.
If you want to take it a step further, start with a monthly to-do list, break it down into a weekly list, then a daily list.
To Wrap Up
Having these routines as a non-negotiable part of your day is integral to your life. Although it may seem like having routines make you feel restricted, it actually just makes you feel more organised, which helps you feel more “free”.
You don’t have control over how your day goes, but you do have control over your morning and night routine. You also have control over what self-care activities you do. You have the choice of when you’ll do your exercise routine. Once you get those routines in check, you just got to work around your work/study routine.
It’s all about taking the small steps which leads to a big difference.
I actually talk about small steps and everything about changing your life through habits in my book, Small Steps to Unlocking Growth which is available on Amazon for only $11.99AUD as a Kindle.
